perverse incentives was peeled away and we got a clear view of just how
unstable and unsustainable our Western patterns of consumption and
commodification have been.
Now, amidst the cultural rubble, something is stirring. Communities are
rediscovering themselves. People are reaching out to help each other.
Relocalization is becoming a real movement, as the insanity of our
dependency on long, fragile supply chains is exposed. Suddenly, local,
healthy food is the most sought-after commodity, and nobody is patenting it
or making obscene profits from it. People are creating wildlife habitats in
their back yards. Microgeneration schemes like solar and wind, where
individuals generate their own power off-the-grid, are looking promising and
affordable. People are weatherizing their homes and installing compact
fluorescent light bulbs. Most importantly, neighbors are discovering each
other, as the resilient networks of human resources that exist right in their
own backyards are strengthened. A Great Transition is underway; a
transition to a saner, more caring, world.
