“We have always been far more a part of great patterns on the globe than
our fearful egos can tolerate knowing. To preserve nature is to preserve the
matrix through which we can experience our soul and the soul of the planet
Earth.” 136
Through our evolutionary heritage, we are bonded genetically with all earth
beings. “Biological diversity and ecological process persist as crucibles on
which human physical and mental fitness rely,” 137 says Kellert. If we
believe, with Thomas Berry, that “In our deepest subjectivity we are earth,”
than we can know that the eyes gazing at us are our own eyes; the eyes of
the earth in its many manifestations, looking at itself.
