Residents of Michigan should be required to spend a month in a part of the
country where water is scarce, before they are granted full citizenship. To
return to Michigan from one of these places, beautiful as they are, is to
return to a lush and enchanted garden. Once you’ve experienced this you
promise never again to complain about the rain, but, like Merton, to simply
listen to it, and, like Nelson, let it enter your bloodstream, and let your eyes
by rainwater ponds, glistening with tears of gratitude. If we Michiganders
could remember this, we might come to know this Michigan place, where it
always rains on weekends, as a blessed land of life and spirit.
