“This third path, which leads toward the spirit of the Thunderbird,” says
                                                                                 22
Thunderhorse, “still remains open for us to establish.”

I recently read about a tree-climbing society of mature adults. They climb
trees for recreation. I’m tempted to join, but there’s something
contradictory about a society of tree-climbers. Tree climbing, at least for
me, is a solitary activity, a way of being in the world but not of it. No longer
is the idea of climbing trees a defense against rejection as it once was. Now
it’s because I crave the company of trees. I know their moods, their
sadness, their silence as they know mine.

Perhaps, when I feel the urge to climb a tree, it is the World Tree archetype
tugging from within. Or perhaps it’s not so grand. Perhaps it’s, as Czelan
               Miloz said,
Not that I want to be a god or a hero,
Just to change into a tree,
                              Grow for ages,
                              Not hurt anyone.
