When you consider that something like 85% of all Americans now say they
are environmentalists, it should not be surprising to find a substantial
number of people involved in commercial enterprises snuggled comfortably
in the midst of that 85%. What is new in the mix is that now we are at a
historic crossing wherein conservation and sustainability can be shown to be
profitable as well as socially responsible. The bridge may not be so icy after
all. It may indeed be summer. Just in case, we proceed with caution. But
more trustingly than we might have a decade ago. We do so with deep
respect for our Detroit heritage and those who are sincerely working to
make things better. From this, we dare to hope for a “certain peace with
each other and the land.” We may yet travel on wheels of goldenrod.
