This is the new understanding of our time, emerging out of the darkness in
our minds. We now know that we exist not only in a sacred space; we exist
also in sacred developmental time. This new understanding was unknown to
our ancestors who marked the cycles of the moon, and to more recent
earthlings who marked the sun-cycles. To them, life was a closed system,
repeating itself exactly the same way year after year. We are in a new time
now. In our time, we know that there are subtle changes over vast
expanses of time. We know that the universe is a single celebratory event
which is itself marked by certain profound shifts in its unfoldment. It seems
to be going somewhere, we know not where. Something is unfolding
through a process of continual self-transcendence, we know not what. We,
as individuals, partake in this Great Unfolding. What we will become we do
not know. But we do know that we are changing.
Though each solstice and equinox, each lunar cycle, can be predicted to be
pretty much the same as the one before, the same cannot be said of this
larger spiral. Each turn of the spiral brings forth newness, utter newness,
the like of which has never been seen before. With this knowledge we have
moved from sacred space into sacred time. We do not yet know how to
celebrate this Sacred Time, though we are beginning to experiment with it.
We will continue to celebrate the sun cycles and moon cycles, and that is as
it should be. But we also need to find ways to celebrate this larger cycle –
(call it a spiracle?) within which they and we are embedded.
And so, as we experience the darkness of our own time let us invite the light
of its special knowledge into our lives and celebrations.
