Applying Your Scleral Lens
Recommended Method: Using a Plunger
1. Wet the cup of the large plunger with insertion solution. Center and attach
the scleral lens on the plunger. You can confirm that the lens is centered on
the plunger using the hole in the plunger as a reference point. If applicable,
orient the black dot(s) to point toward you during application. A suction will
be created that will hold the lens to the plunger.
2. Fill the Scleral Lens with insertion solution to the point of being overfull.
3. Place a mirror lying down on a counter top. Bend your head over the mirror
and tuck your chin toward your chest to make your face parallel with the
table.
4. Grasp your upper eyelid with the index finger of your free hand, holding the edge
of the lid just under the lashes. Hold your lower eyelid open with your thumb
and keep both of your eyes open as wide as possible. Look into the mirror or
directly into the hole of the plunger as you place the Scleral Lens directly on the
surface of you eye.
5. Begin to apply the lens. Initially, you will feel the fluid but you are not there
yet! Gently press the lens further on to the eye.
6. Release the plunger from the Scleral Lens by squeezing completely. Maintain
the upward pressure against the eye while squeezing to release the lens.
Then pull the plunger away from the eye.
7. The Scleral Contact has now been released onto your eye! Release and close
your eyelids slowly. It is normal for a small amount of solution to spill out
during this process. Check for bubbles and reapply the lens if it is needed.
